Lindsey Burke, Breaking Out!

Ashley Williams, SVP, Ag Practice Group

Lindsey Burke walked away a real winner at Technekes’ Annual Meeting and Holiday Event.

First, Lindsey participated in two “Technekes Idol” talent show performances.  Ultimately, her individual clogging routine took first place, beating out six other performances, including her team’s rendition of  the “12 Days of Technekes.”  The talented Lindsey is taking her first ever clogging class.  Talk about bravery!

More important, Lindsey won the coveted Breakout Award, which is awarded annually to a Technekes employee who has been with the company for fewer than two years, but has already made a tremendous impact.

The “Breakout Award” trophy is a real working clock crafted from blown out engine parts.  Pretty appropriate with Lindsey and her family being in the farm machinery auction business, don’t you think?

Please join me in congratulating Lindsey and dedicating this very appropriate song to her!

End Of An Era Or Bright Beginning?

Ashley Gordy, Senior Project Coordinator

Have you heard? Some 3,700 United States Postal Service offices could close their doors in 2012.

I understand the reasoning, of course. The USPS faces a record $9 billion deficit. Shutting down these “low traffic” offices will save about $200 million annually.

Still, perhaps because our business relies so heavily on traditional mail services – particularly in the rural areas most affected by the closings — or perhaps for sentimental reasons — I’m getting married soon and envisioning how my invitations will be received by our guests — the closings make me wonder what other changes are in store.

According to The Wall Street Journal, not every state will be affected. In fact, my home state, Delaware, isn’t even on the list. Of course, the entire state only has 70 post offices to begin with!

I’ll be curious to see how our business will be affected going forward. Direct mail will still be a factor, to be sure, but does this signal the end of an era or a bright beginning?  Indeed, going forward, I believe we’ll see much greater emphasis on phone and email campaigns.

In my mind, though, neither of those will ever replicate the impact – or bring quite the same smile to the face – as a personally delivered direct mail package. Or, for that matter, a hand-addressed wedding invitation.

What do you think?

The Wall Street Journal has put together a terrific interactive tool, which will let you see whether any offices near you might be closing. Click here for the link.

Katie Hedrick Switches Gears

In our business, the ability to switch gears, make up lost ground, and still succeed — on time –is essential.  We constantly adapt to changes in the market, changes in client strategy and even changes in the weather.

Which brings us to Katie Hedrick.  Four years ago, Katie started out as a biology major at North Carolina State University. At her commencement ceremony this spring, however, Katie crossed the stage to receive a diploma in business marketing. Plainly, Katie deviated from her original plan, deciding that a different major would be more beneficial. From our perspective, she was right.

It is our pleasure to announce that Katie Hedrick, a native of nearby Belmont, has joined Technekes, as a junior account coordinator for our ag practice team. Although her degree is only months old, Katie has had hands-on internship experience with three well-known marketing and advertising agencies in the Raleigh area.

Looking back, Katie said she was hesitant about altering her major and questioned the value of making a switch. After her hire and transition to working at Technekes, though, Katie can confidently say that her success was bred by switching gears.   What a perfect fit for Technekes.

Seeing Myles Ahead

In the past year, we’ve featured Account Supervisor, Diana Henderson, singing the national anthem on a baseball field and out cutting wheat on a tractor, but this is surely the sweetest image of all – with her newborn son, Myles Dylan.

Born Friday, June 17, Myles weighed in at a healthy nine pounds, two ounces.  As new mom Diana reports, “Everyone says that big babies are happy babies, so hopefully, I’ll get some sleep before I get back into Technekes gear at the end of August.”

Please join us in welcoming the newest Technecian and much-loved addition to the Henderson family!

A Vacation By Any Other Name …

You can take the girl out of the office, but from the looks of it, you can’t take the office out of Jen Potenzano.

On a recent trip to Indiana, Jen took time out of her vacation to visit Fair Oaks Farm and learn a little more about sustainable and responsible dairy farming.

According to Jen, Fair Oaks is a great place to tour, featuring:

  • Ten farms housing 3,000 animals each.
  • Each farm has a 72-cow carousel milking parlor
  • On average, 80 calves born daily
  • Methane as a source of power for the farm and 7,500 homes
  • A 3D interactive theater
  • A shop selling fresh milk, homemade ice cream and specialty butter.

Talk about going above and beyond! If only Jen could’ve brought us back some of that farm-fresh ice-cream!
