Nothing Smooth About
The Midnight Mo’rauders

Alex Dowlin, Director of Sales Operations, Healthcare Practice Group

As many of you know, a group of brave gentlemen here at Technekes in Raleigh and Charlotte have taken on the task of bringing awareness for prostate cancer … by growing moustaches.

Someone very close to my wife, Heather, and me has been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, and to show support for him and bring awareness for men’s health, I’ve pledged my “attempt” to cultivate a genuine 100% face grown moustache for 30 days.  It’s Movember, the month formerly known as November, which is dedicated to growing moustaches and raising awareness and funds for men’s health. I have joined the movement and will be donating my upper lip to the cause for 30 days.

My moustache (Mo) will spark conversations, and no doubt generate some laughs; all in the name of raising vital awareness and funds for cancers affecting men.  Please join in our effort by becoming a Mo Bro or Mo Sista, or support with donations or forwarding on our progress to your networks.  You can see updated pictures of the team here:  http://mobro.co/alexdowlin.  (As of today, it looks like my lip is dirty.)  This won’t be pretty.  I will forward out progress of our team, the Midnight Mo’rauders as we progress.

Why am I so passionate about men’s health?

  • 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime
  • A man is diagnosed with prostate cancer every 2.2 minutes
  • 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
  • 24% of men are less likely to go the doctor compared to women

Please support my efforts by making a donation to our team, The Midnight Mo’rauders, at http://mobro.co/alexdowlin.

You can even write a check payable to “Movember Foundation”, reference my name and Registration Number 1913786 and send it to: Movember Foundation, PO Box 2726, Venice, CA 90294-2726

If you’d like to find out more about the type of work you’d be helping to fund by supporting Movember, take a look at the Programs We Fund section on the Movember website: http://us.movember.com/about

Thank you all in advance for supporting my efforts to change the face of men’s health.

Congrats to Piedmont Middle School!

Although, we like to think we’ve got quite the brain trust here at Technekes, here’s a group who may have us beat — the 2011 Science Olympiad team from nearby Piedmont Middle School, who took second place in the state tournament!

The team is now rushing to raise funds ($16,000!) to compete at the national tournament in Madison, Wisconsin.  Technekes is one of many businesses and individuals supporting the cause, but the team still needs support.  To find out more, just click here.  And again, congrats to the team on a job well done!

Making A “House” A Home

We had a few special visitors in our Charlotte office last week.  No – it wasn’t the guy with the big red shoes.  But you’re pretty close.  Ari Harris and Mona Johnson-Gibson, from the new Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, stopped by to accept the donation Technekes made on behalf of our clients.

Ari and Mona also took time to tell us more about some of the terrific opportunities coming up at the new Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte.

Construction is moving right along.  The official opening, in fact, could be as soon as this spring, which means volunteers are needed now.

As Mona, executive director since 2008, said, “Anything you can think of in your own house is something we need to take care of in a Ronald McDonald House – except our house is 35,000 square feet.

“We only have four full-time employees,” she continued, “So we always can use extra hands to help with gardening, cooking, routine maintenance, and practically everything else.  And we’re always looking for folks to help work with our families – particularly if you have a gift for entertaining young children with things like arts and crafts and performing.”

If you’re able and interested – either in doing something on your own, or better still, in banding together a “team” to do things on a regular basis – you can drop them a line at info@rmhofcharlotte.org.

Who knows – you may even get to try on the big guy’s shoes!

All In To Fight Cancer — March 30

Tickets now available for Texas Hold-Em Benefit

The stakes have never been higher.

Cancer has become the world’s leading cause of death.  Over 40% of all men and women born today will be diagnosed with some type of cancer during their lifetime.  It is a tragic statistic, but in a sad way, not surprising.  Nearly all of us can share stories of loved ones who have been affected – either directly or indirectly.

A couple of Technekes executives, however, are determined to have a hand in changing those odds – and have a great time to boot.

President and COO, Steve Amedio, and creative director Scott Miner have banded together with other Charlotte leaders to hold a Texas Hold ‘Em fundraiser, with all proceeds going to Livestrong, the Lance Armstrong nonprofit group dedicated to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.

It promises to be a great time – and there couldn’t be a greater cause.  And we sure could use your help.  At the very simplest level, we’re asking you to help raise awareness of our cause by “friending” our group on Facebook.

Better still, you can join us March 30.  You’ll find all the details on the All-In To Fight Cancer invitation.  Even if you can’t join us, you can still make a contribution.  Again, all the details are on the invitation.

Whichever way you choose to help, we’re grateful, because together, we can beat this thing.

You can bet on it.

A Nose For Fundraising

The gang at Technekes is always ready to lend a helping hand to community – and sometimes, a nose, as well.

When Ronald McDonald House Charities announced they were building a house here in Charlotte, we were one of the first to contribute to the cause.  And now, we’re stepping up that support as one of the presenting sponsors of The Red Shoe Shoot Out fundraiser this fall.

The Red Shoe Shoot Out is a sporting clays tournament to support the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte , which is scheduled to open in 2011.

The Shoot Out itself will be November 5 at Fork Stables, but plainly, we’ve already got a bunch of clowns hard at work on the project, including Alison Hoskins, who designed the spiffy new logo.  And now we’re looking for additional sponsors – and teams!  No experience necessary!  Just contact Erin Faucette or Jan Burlee at Technekes (704.342.2900) for more info – and perhaps, a red nose of your own!

Just a few of the clowns in our Charlotte office.
